Replace My Austin Air Purifier Filter

filterreplacement“How do I replace my Austin Air Purifier filter” is a question that we hear from many of our customers.  Replacing the filter on a standard or junior Austin Air purifier is as easy as 1, 2, 3!  Here are the 3 steps to follow when replacing your filter.

  1. Unplug the unit and turn it upside down on a soft surface (rug, carpet, towel).
  2. Unscrew the four screws on the bottom of the purifier.  You will need a regular screw driver.  Pull out the old filter canister which will be round.  Be sure to remove the pre-filter which looks like a blanket that is wrapped around the canister.
  3. Put the new filter in the unit with the pre-filter wrapped around the canister.  Screw the 4 screws back into the bottom of the unit.  Turn it right side up, plug it in, and run it on high for one hour.  Then turn it back to the normal speed.

You’re done!  Fresh air is on it’s way to you.

Austin Air Purifiers Explained

maturewomanelegantjpegWe get many calls asking for explanations about Austin Air Purifiers……and how to tell which unit is the best for their situation. Perhaps the easiest way to explain the differences is to talk about the similarities first.

All Austin Air purifiers have a large particle, medium particle, and HEPA filter.  The large particle filter traps particles that can be seen with the naked eye.  The medium particle prefilter removes particles that are smaller and less visible to the eye, but larger than microscopic size.

The HEPA or high efficiency particle arresting filter is the same type of filter used in hospitals.  By definition it is able to remove 99.97% of particles down to .3 microns in size.  In other words, for every 10,000 microscopic particles in the air, the HEPA will remove 99,997 of them.

The thinking behind having these 3 filters is that no one filter is expected to remove all size particles and this gradation of filter size is why Austin is able to offer a 5-year prorated warranty on the filters. It is the 4th filter in each of the units that makes them different.

In the Austin Air HealthMate Purifier (often referred to as the HM400) the 4th filter is 15 lbs. of activated carbon zeolite.  This filter is a multi- purpose filter that will remove particles as wells as gases, odors, and some chemicals.

In the Austin Air Allergy Machine Air Purifier (or the HEGA series…HEGA stands for high efficiency gas adsorption) the 4th filter is carbon cloth.  It has a dual function of removing gases and chemicals, as well as particles since the carbon strands are woven like a cloth.  Carbon cloth was originally developed by the British to combat chemical warfare.  This filter is best at removing dust, dust mites, pollen, pet dander, mold and mildew spores, as well as noxious odors and gases.

The Austin Air HeathMate Plus Air Purifier  is just as its name implies.  It has everything the HealthMate Purifier has PLUS an additive called potassium iodide.  This additive enhances the carbon’s ability to remove Volatile Organic Chemicals (VOCs).  This filter is best used to remove high powered chemicals that frequently off-gas from furniture, carpet, adhesives, paints, enamels, nail and beauty salon products, and fine arts studio materials.

The Austin Air Pet Machine Air Purifier has a filter that is similar to the HealthMate.  It has the 15lbs. of activated carbon zeolite plus an additive called ammonasorb.  And as its name implies, ammonasorb enhances the carbon’s ability to remove ammonia that off gasses from urine.

The Austin Air Bedroom Machine Air Purifier is a combination of the Allergy Machine and HealthMate Purifiers.  It has both the 15 lbs. of activated carbon as well as carbon cloth.  So it is equally efficient at removing gases and particles.

The filter comes in each purifier when purchased, which the makes the purifiers plug-in ready.  Each standard size purifier will accept any standard size filter if the purifier housing was made after 1995.

This means if you purchase the Allergy Machine Air Purifier, and then discover that your cat has been missing the litter box.  You can purchase the Pet Machine replacement filter without having to purchase a new unit.

Austin Air products are made in the United States.  They are made in one of the largest manufacturing plants in the United States, and are located in Buffalo, New York.
